Created in 1981 as a result of the artists wish to use all 300 glass colors from his hot shop, this vibrant series evolved into a one-of-a-kind celebration of color and light. With a name meaning spot in Italian, it inspired Chihuly to invent not only novel ways to explore colored glass, but also to employ new techniques to allow each molten glass nuance to shine. As an extension of human breath according, glass-blowing is a way of creating that comes naturally to Chihuly.

Gaining shape by breath, the Macchia glass would also receive an abundance of coloristic effects and contrasts from glass shards that would melt over the vessel during the creation process. Speckles, translucency and surprising contrasts of the inner and outer shell of the series vessels set it apart as a long-lasting experiment in invention and demonstration of true mastery in glass art. About Dale Chihuly One of the most famous contemporary glass artists in the world, Dale Chihuly is best known for his monumental sculptures and installations. He is the name behind the spectacular ceiling at the Bellagios flower garden in Las Vegas and the creator of the Rotunda Chandelier at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Mastering the art of Murano glasswork, he continued the experiments with glassblowing and thus became one of the people who brought the ancient art of glassblowing back into the spotlight on an international scale.
