Companion print to The Chase. The bobcat (lynx rufus) is a resourceful, highly adaptable cat that makes its home in various habitats across North America, from deserts to snow-covered mountains. As common as it is, the bobcat is seldom encountered by man because it is a solitary animal that is usually active in the absence of daylight. Although the bobcat can live in almost any environment, it prefers brushy country for concealment. Medium in size, the bobcat survives by combining its sharp sight and hearing with physical agility. A compact body and long rear legs give the cat the ability to spring great distances, and large, padded paws enable it to move swiftly on top of snow. Charles Frace had portrayed the bobcat in adolescence, aware of its considerable natural ability and eager to use it in pursuit of The Quest.
